A snowmobile council is supporting legislation to tie any recreational drunk driving offense, to your driver's license.
The DNR Committee and Governor's Snowmobile Recreational Council voted 3 to 10 to send a letter to the governor's office in hopes that he will support the legislation.
The committee wants to crack down on those who are drinking and driving recreational vehicles, especially for those who already have an OWI offense on their driver's license.
That means, if you are cited for driving with a blood alcohol level more than 0.08 on any ATV, snowmobile or boat, they want it to show up on your regular driving record as a second offense OWI.
The snowmobile administrator for the DNR says since the beginning of the year, there have been 23 snowmobile fatalities, 70% of those were alcohol related.
The administrator says it was important for the council to respond to the problem of drinking and snowmobiling in the Badger State, and they're making sure people know it's never OK to drink and drive.
"They can make a sober decision not to drive ahead of time when they know there's going to be a penalty associated with their driver's license and the end result is to save lives out there," said Gary Eddy, DNR Snowmobile Administrator.
He says Minnesota and Michigan both have passed legislation tying recreational OWI's to driver's licenses, and it's time our state does the same.
Committee members acknowledge there's no guarantee it will get attention from the governor, but they're hoping it will help draft legislation to get this effort to become a reality.
