Officials are working to alleviate congestion and reduce the number of accidents on the busy, east to west thoroughfare.
Mayor Linda Lawrence says the city has to consider the needs of motorists along with the concerns of homeowners who live on the street.
"Hopefully, we'll find a solution that works for everyone," said Linda Lawrence, Wausau Mayor, "we won't make everyone happy, but we need to plan for probably 2010."
Possible alternatives to the current Thomas Street setup include turning Thomas and Sherman into one ways. That option would have the least impact on homeowners.
Another route the city could take would be to expand Thomas Street and add more turning lanes.
