As temperatures begin to climb, many of us will be cooling off in Wisconsin's natural waters. A member of the Wausau Water Rescue team wants to remind you of life saving steps to take if you find yourself or someone else drowning.

Engineer Ted Tautges with the Wausau Fire Department showed us a billboard in front of their building that reads "Never Swim Alone."

He says everyone should swim with at least one other person no matter what age, in case something happens and neither of you can find help.

He says the most important thing to remember if your boat capsizes is to grab onto your life vest. By law, every boat should have one life vest for each person, as well as one extra flotation device.

He says if you see someone who's drowning, the most important thing is to encourage them to hold on, and keep eye contact with you. Try and help them find anything floating nearby they can hang on to and never hesitate to call 911.

"If they do go under the water the most important thing is try as accurately as you can to remember where that is because when we arrive that's where we need to start our search," said Ted Tautges with the Wausau Fire Department.

He says you should not only remember the point where they went under, but also the point beyond that, possibly on the opposite side of the shore. That way you can line up with where they were so there's a more accurate place to start a search.
