University Tuition

University of Wisconsin System officials are proposing that the children of alumni of three campuses get a major break on their tuition bills if they attend those universities.

But they would get it only if they live outside of Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Out-of-state tuition at UW's Eau Claire, Oshkosh and La Crosse campuses would be cut 25 percent for children of alumni starting next fall.

System officials note that UW schools have 346 fewer out-of-state undergraduates compared with last year. They note that tuition for non-resident students at most of the universities has increased more than 50 percent during the last five years.

UW-Eau Claire Chancellor Donald Mash notes that, even with the 25 percent break, the out-of-state students at the three campuses would still be paying three times the tuition that in-state students do.

Residents of Wisconsin are paying $3,500 in tuition at the three schools. So are those of Minnesota, under a tuition reciprocity agreement.

Non-residents attending UW schools this year pay more than $13,500.
