Merrill will soon be home to a convicted child molester being released from prison.

Though on intensive supervision, Jesse Brackett, 33, will be living in the city beginning July 15th.

Brackett was convicted in 1997 of first degree sexual assault of a child, child enticement, and exposing himself.

He was sentenced to 18 years in prison and has served 14. In two weeks he'll be a free man.

However, it can be argued that Brackett will never truly be free again.

Because of his conviction and deisgnation as a child molester, he'll be monitored and tracked for the rest of his life.

He'll live in a transitional living facility at 1800 E. Main St, and according to Merrill Police Chief Ned Seubert, will never be allowed to get near another child.

"He'll be on GPS monitoring, very strict restrictions: his routes where he walks, where he can be, where he can shop, where he can look for employment," Chief Seubert said.

An electronic monitoring ankle bracelet will never leave his body, and a GPS tracking device will be a part of his wardrobe whenever he leaves his house.

And if he goes off his designated route of travel throughout Merrill, authorities will be alerted immediately, and will know exactly where to find him.

There are more than 42 rules for those on his type of supervision.

Among them is staying 250 feet away from schools, playgrounds, or anywhere kids may be present. He can't use a computer, cell phone, drink alcohol, or leave the city.

Apparently, the Merrill police were unaware or just don't care that are seven children under the age of 12 are living within two houses of this guy on three sides. Are we supposed to keep them locked inside? Hopefully he will not try to escape like the other guy living there that was tackled on my front lawn and taken way in handcuffs by the police when he tried to make a run for it a few weeks ago. Coincidentally, the Merrill squad that normally clocks speeder on that corner has been noticeably absent since the prisoners moved in.
