MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A new Milwaukee County witness protection program will be dedicated Tuesday to a man who was killed in 2007 after testifying against a criminal who shot him.
Prosecutors around the country are struggling to find enough money to protect witnesses even as intimidation surges.
Milwaukee County had gone for years without any witness protection program. District Attorney John Chisholm has been working to re-establish a full-fledged unit since Maurice Pulley Jr. was fatally shot.
Chisholm started a unit last year that focuses on heading off intimidation before it happens. The county's 2009 budget includes about $340,000 to keep the program going.
Chisholm, state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, Pulley's father and other Milwaukee politicians will dedicate the unit to the younger Pulley.
