For many children, eating their fruits and vegetables can be a challenge, but the Wausau school district has found a way to get their students excited about them. Their summer program 'The Magic Bean' has third through fifth grade students learn about healthy nutrition, while growing the food themselves.
Students spend a lot of their time in their classroom, but their instructor says the kids really enjoy getting outside and into the garden. Along with weeding, planting, and harvest their crops, the students also go on walks and learn the science behind the food.
For the students the best part of the class is being able to taste the fruits of their labor. Their instructors say that after the program is over the students have a greater appreciation for fruits and vegetables and are excited to bring what they've learned home with them.
The summer program runs through mid-July, but the Lincoln Elementary school garden is worked on year-round to help promote healthy eating.
