For many the fourth of July wouldn't be complete without fireworks, including a few your light off yourself, but putting on your own show can be dangerous is certain precautions aren't taken first.
The manager of Fireworks Depot in Merrill says fireworks are a tradition everyone loves, but with it comes some danger. Derrick Sucow says with more fireworks available to the public, there's a greater need for proper safety precautions.
Fireworks are an explosive device so parents should be cautious when children are present. Sucow says parents should make sure the fireworks they are using aren't too loud or bright for the children, and that parents use their judgment on which fireworks children get to light off themselves. One rule that should be always be followed is never try altering any firework.
While many people choose to light off their own fireworks, the Marathon County Sheriff's Department wants to remind you that any firework that leaves the ground is considered illegal and you can be fined for using them. A Marathon County Deputy says a better alternative is to enjoy the firework shows many towns put on instead of shooting off you own.
Deputy Jim Armstrong says every time they investigate a firework complaint it takes away man-power from the department. He says by going to a public show it allows them to focus on patrolling the roads for drunk drivers and better protect the public.
