Relieving Stress at Brain Gym

Stress affects all of us, and many of us probably wish we could think a little more clearly when it hits.

This week, a class at UW-Stevens Point is teaching some people how to do just that.

"Brain Gym 101 covers 26 activities that are specifically organized to access different parts of our body and brain," says its instructor, Pamela Luedtke.

But participants in the 4-day course at UWSP also learn more about the links between the brain and body, and how your body's activity can relax and de-stress your brain.

"Brain Gym is movement, it's that quality of when we take a walk and we feel, we've had an argument or whatever, and we feel so much better after taking a walk," says Luedtke. "We're using movement as a way of releasing tension or thinking things through."

And some of Luedtke's students say they've seen the benefits.

"I've tried some things with my children at home, and I've really seen some impact in their accomplishing their goals," says student Angie Nyquist.

And now she's excited to learn more.

"Just to be more aware of our bodies, and how our bodies and minds are connected, it could be used to relieve stress or to prepare yourself to learn anything new," says Nyquist. "I think this is a good investment of my time."

If you'd like to take Brain Gym 101, this summer's course is full, but UWSP will be offering another class in January.
