Congressman David Obey and Mayor Linda Lawrence cut the ribbon on the new Lincoln Neighborhood Park on the corner of Sherman Street and Fifth Avenue, but a bit of history will remain as the smokestack from the old marathon rubber plant still stands.
Obey secured $365,000 from the federal government to demolish the existing building and clean the area up.
"What is here is a result of local neighborhood input, so it's an example of the partnership between neighborhood people, the city, the state and federal government, so it's the way the system is supposed to work," says Obey.
The city of Wausau also chipped in for the development. New residential development is also in the works.
