It's something many people rarely experience, but if you ever find yourself being attacked by someone you'll need to know some self defense skills. That's why instructors from Great White Martial Arts in Wausau put on a free self defense class.
About 20 people showed up to take part in a free self defense class. Instructors taught basic jiu jitsu moves to the students focusing on the use of leverage to stop an attacker.
The program began with instructors going over the difference between self protection and self defense. They also taught how to protect yourself from getting into a dangerous situation in the first place.
Students were then taught many standing and ground techniques to escape from an attack. Instructors say jiu jitsu works well for self defense because it allows even a small person to escape a large enemy.
Jiu jitsu is also a great way to exercise and become more fit. Many of the students say they enjoy learning jiu jitsu because it is less aggressive than other martial arts.
Instructors say if at all possible it's better to run away from a dangerous situation rather than getting involved, but the skills taught today will help if you do become in danger.
