Students across the state are breathing a little easier as summer break begins, but they may not be the only ones, thanks to the work of students at UW-Stout.
Over the past semester, students there helped design the Overnight Pediatric Oxygen Delivery System, otherwise known as OPOD.
This device could go a long way towards helping kids with children's interstitial lung disease, a condition which impairs their ability to get oxygen.
Five different designs for OPOD were developed in a Human Interface and Interaction class at UW-Stout.
The device will fit over a child's bed and deliver oxygen while they sleep.
The project came about after Ann Gettys, President of the Children's Interstitial Lung Disease Foundation, saw her then 6-month-old son, who has a form of the disease, struggle with having oxygen tubes taped to his face.
The challenge was then brought to the college, where officials say the students excelled, and their designs will definitely impact the final product.
Designers hope the device will make treatments easier to bear for children.
