It was supposed to be a week of intense cycling and taking in the scenic beauty of the Wisconsin River. But for a 13-year-old boy, that bike ride was cut short after a terrible accident Tuesday afternoon.
Over 1,000 cyclists on a 500 mile bike tour were pedaling through Marathon County, when one of the youngest participants was killed.
According to investigators with the Marathon County Sheriff's Department, 13-year-old Colby Crothers from Oklahoma was riding his bike in the southbound lane of County Highway KK when he was suddenly hit by a truck traveling in the same direction.
The truck driver told investigators the boy was riding his bike on a gravel shoulder when his front wheel wobbled, he lost control, and veered into traffic.
The driver says he tried to steer away, but couldn't avoid hitting Colby.
The accident is still under investigation while police question other witnesses.
The boy was immediately transported to Wausau Hospital, and according to hospital officials, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
