Local role models were honored for their accomplishments Wednesday, and they all have something in common....they're women.

During the Wausau YWCA's 17th annual Women of Vision awards luncheon, three ladies were recognized.

Among them is Karen Petersen, a retired nurse who's focused much of her work with disadvantaged people, specifically children. She also volunteers with United Way, The Neighbor's Place and The Women's Community.

Also receiving the title is Patte Prehn. Prehn has dedicated her life to the Girl Scout program in central Wisconsin. Serving as troop leader and program chair, Prehn has helped created several innovative programs and activities.

Lastly, Dr. Ellen Schumann received the 'woman of vision' declaration. Dr. Schumann is the Medical Director of Women And Children Services at St. Clare's Hospital. In her tenure, she's helped implement the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) program. She's also involved with United Way, several schools and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

In addition, two 'women of tomorrow' were given $500 scholarships.

Brittany Babiak, a Mosinee High School senior who will be pursuing a degree in neurobilogy, received the scholarship.

As did Trinka Bankes, a non-traditional student who is pursuing a degree in social work through Upper Iowa University.

"This event just brings to the forefront some of the accomplishments of the outstanding women in our community and hopefully inspires others to do the same," said Sheila Rossmiller, YWCA's marketing and fund director.

According to Rossmiller, a woman of vision is someone who goes above and beyond her duties in order to create positive and influential change for the community.

Hundreds showed up for the luncheon and heard from the recipients, along with author Lorna Landvik, the event's keynote speaker.

The winners were nominated and then chosen by a committee of community members.
