Highground Celebration

This Veterans Day may have added significance to many people because of the current conflict in Iraq, but at one local ceremony it was obvious that Tuesday was just like any other Veterans Day, extremely important.

Flags flew high, veterans of past wars marched proud, but soldiers in the current War on Terror were on everyone's mind. It was all part of the Veterans Day ceremony at the Highground just outside Neillsville.

Veterans from every major conflict, from World War I to the Gulf War, got together to share stories and remember those that are no longer with us.

“The veterans we talked to say that even though we are at war right now. Every single Veterans Day has a significance to them.”

“It's kind of sad that it takes a conflict to bring out the patriotism because people should recognize veterans as being important people whether there's a conflict going on or not.”

“I think it's just that people are beginning to be more conscious of what the service men have done.”

To these veterans, the day was about taking time to remember our current and former soldiers, whether in times of war or peace.
