A Stevens Point middle school is stapling together a chain that when extended would stretch from Stevens Point to Wausau and back.

Students from St. Peter Middle School in Stevens Point will be working over night and into Saturday, trying to secure their place in the Guiness Book of Records.

Sixty seventh and eighth graders from the middle school are piecing together 60,000 links. If they finish their task by 10 a.m. Saturday morning, they'll have earned a spot in the Guiness Book of Records.

"They started back in march as far as getting prepared for it," said math and history teacher Leeann Stremaowski, "They're finally ready and today was the day. As you can see, they're gung ho."

They started out putting a chain together with a link for each number in pi, a number used in the equation for finding the distance around a circle. If they reach their goal Saturday morning, the chain will be 51.3 miles long when it's complete.
