Channel 7 History

Channel 7 first went on the air in 1954. It was a much smaller staff of only about five people in the newsroom and the requirements for being on air were not overly selective.

"If you could breath, read, extemporate a little bit," said Mark Zelich, Newschannel 7, 1957-94, "anything along those lines that you could do and you'd fly."

Since then, Zelich says the competition has increased and become more intense between the stations.

Also, cable news and the Internet have given the viewing audience many more choices for coverage, making the journalist's job more difficult.

"Because of the plethora of news information out now available through electronic media," said Zelich, "the audience is hip, you can't sell them short, you can’t insult them."

Even the exterior of the building has gone through some substantial changes.

Up until moving to its current location on Grand Avenue in 1970. Channel 7 was broadcasting out of a mansion in Wausau.
