Officer Michael Lutz shot Timothy Nabors in the chest yesterday following a traffic stop. Witnesses say Nabors had his hands in the air and held up his shirt to show officers he did not have a gun.

They say when a gun belonging to Nabors' passenger skidded across the pavement, Lutz shot the man.

Police Chief Arthur Jones said today at least one of the two officers at the scene says Nabors had a gun in his possession. Nabors is hospitalized at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital.

It's the fifth time in a little more than a year that an unarmed man has been shot by Milwaukee police. Federal authorities are investigating the four previous incidents.
