Weather Authority Alert: Snowy and Icy Conditions Throughout Tonight

Leaf Burning Dangers

A family in Schofield is homeless after fire destroyed their home Tuesday. It happened after burning leaves got out of control. Experts tell us the rules for burning leaves and some safer alternatives.

Eventually the leaves land on your yard, then the question is what to do with them. Burning leaves is legal in several area communities, but if you choose to burn, know the restrictions. You can only burn between 6 p.m. and midnight on days when the wind is light, and you must always be in view of the fire.

A dry fall has put Marathon County at a high fire risk right now, another reason experts say burning your leaves should be your last resort.

"Composting is better than burning because first, fire can get away no matter what. Composting, you're not starting a fire."

Composting is a simple process that turns leaves into organic fertilizer. Not only is it a safer choice, it's better for the environment. For more information on composting you can visit the DNR website at www.dnr.state.wi.us

Some communities do also offer leaf pickup in the fall. To find out the schedule in your town, call your local public works department.
