Wisconsin Teachers Receive High Grades

Ninety nine percent of people teaching your children have just been ranked "highly qualified" by the government. In fact, Wisconsin has the highest percentage in the country.

Paige Lambrecht went to a local school to find out what makes our teachers stand out. It seems the rest of the country should be taking notes on teachers like these at Benjamin Franklin Junior High in Stevens Point.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Education, Wisconsin has the most amount of highly qualified teachers in the nation.

"The teachers admit it's great to be recognize, but what do they say is the best thing about having highly qualified teachers? It benefits the most important people, the students."

"They just encourage me through their own excitement about the topic, to do the best I can possibly do when it comes to teaching."

"That's what it's all about is the kids. I mean I enjoy teaching math, teaching computers. I enjoy the coaching I do, but you enjoy it because you get to work with the kids."

Teachers also point to excellent continuing education courses and a high quality of life in central Wisconsin as factors in the excellence of our educators, but what they keep going back to are the kids.

"A good teacher is simply a person that enjoys being with the students. So when you say we've got 99 percent of teachers in Wisconsin labeled as good teachers, that means we've got the vast majority of teachers in Wisconsin who really enjoy working with the students."

Loving what you do and loving whom you're doing it for, a simple equation for a lifetime of success. To be considered highly qualified, a must have a bachelor's degree, a state certification and demonstrate a mastery of the subject they teach.
