Fifteen acres between the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin and Bridge Street in Wausau are about to undergo a major renovation.
Monday, phase one of the river redevelopment project began. An underground stream will be dug to the river's edge, including a waterfall.
Crews are also working on clearing contamination from the land; as petroleum, lead and chlorinated solvents are in the soil.
The rest of the project will bring other shops and residential living spaces, complimenting downtown businesses.
The city of Wausau received $400,000 from the EPA from a Brownfield Grant to fund the project. The city says it will take a couple of years to complete.
