In Trempealeau County, witnesses say a man involved in a "road rage'' incident yesterday crashed his car, apparently stole another one and led officers on a high-speed chase.
The man lost control of the car north of the village of Trempealeau and rolled it into cornfield.
Witness Jeff Tourville says deputies were shouting at the man to put down a knife and get on the ground.
The sheriff's department says the situation ended when police shot the armed man.
The man was airlifted to La Crosse Gunderson Lutheran Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In Polk County, Sheriff Ann Hraychuck confirms one person died after a shootout with authorities yesterday.
