Nursing Homes

A state board is recommending long term care for the elderly in Wisconsin should be reformed. That would include eliminating nursing homes.

Board on Aging director George Potaracke says the traditional nursing home will either change, become a true rehab center or won't exist at all.

If the board's recommendations are adopted, Medicaid payments for long-term nursing home care could be cut to encourage people to use in-home medical services and other alternatives.

The board also suggests that the state look into investing in a long-term care insurance fund and more closely regulate out-of-state companies that want to operate retirement facilities in Wisconsin.
