Senate Passes Budget Fix, Sends Package to Governor

The budget bill fixes a projected $3 billion deficit without raising taxes, but it forces local governments and schools to live under limits on the property taxes they levy.

On a voice vote, the Senate approved changes the Assembly made last week.

Gov. Doyle can sign the budget, veto parts of it or reject the entire plan.

Doyle has already said he's worried about the plan because it would dramatically cut how much schools could spend because of the property tax limits.

He also opposes changes the plan would make to the formula the state uses to give aid to local governments.

A veto override takes a two-thirds vote in each house.
