Doyle calls is a Republican "assault'' on the environment. The governor also renewed a pledge to eliminate proposed cuts to the conservation fund that would limit how much land the state buys with the money.

It would also require the Department of Natural Resources to try to sell off $40 million in land the state owns over the next two years.

Doyle was flanked by representatives of various environmental groups today for a news conference on the stewardship fund.

GOP Senator Alberta Darling says the governor is distorting Republican efforts to rein in state spending. She says lawmakers are able to balance that work with the need to preserve the stewardship program.
