MILWAUKEE (AP) -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says Marquette University is doing classroom experiments in which turtles are being struck on the head with a hammer to kill them and frogs and rats are being maimed and killed in teaching physiology.
The group has asked the university to use non-animal methods for instruction in the class, including detailed computer animations.
Marquette graduate school dean, William Wiener, said Monday that all state and federal laws and regulations regarding use of animals in the class were followed. He says an investigation of PETA's complaint, which was filed in November, concluded no university guidelines or protocols were violated, including that all animals were anesthetized before experiments were done.
Justin Goodman of PETA says a student in the class brought the plight of the animals to PETA's attention.
