Snowmobiler Killed in Accident Overnight, 1 Arrested in Shawano County

Investigator Jim Hoffman with the Stockbridge-Munsee Police Department says on New Years Eve at about 6:45 p.m. the Shawano County Sheriff's Department received a report of a multiple snowmobile crash with injuries on the Mountain Bay Trail between CTH G and Hillview Road in the Town of Herman.

Stockbridge-Munsee Police Responded to the scene. 55-year old David L. Hoeft from Shawano was pronounced dead at the scene. 58-year old Hollis E. Hoeft from Appleton was transported to the Shawano Medical Center for treatment. He was later flown to Theda Clark Hospital. 49-year old Mark E. Hoeft from Shawano was arrested at the scene for operating a snowmobile while intoxicated.

Preliminary investigation shows the lead snowmobile struck a deer. After the initial impact, the other two snowmobiles following behind became involved in the crash. A DNR warden was called to the scene to conduct the crash investigation.

The accident remains under investigation at this time.
