The state would lose an opportunity to apply for nearly $3 million in federal aid if a lower limit isn't signed into law by July 15.

The Assembly approved the bill lowering the limit to .08 in May, but the Senate failed to take it up before adjourning yesterday for the summer.

Governor Doyle has urged legislators to act quickly.

Senate Majority Leader Mary Panzer says the Senate could go into extraordinary session as early as Tuesday to take up the legislation. Panzer says the Senate will meet as long as she has assurances there are enough Democratic votes to pass the bill.

Republicans control the chamber 18 to 15. Panzer says she has twelve votes from Republicans, meaning she needs at least five Democrats to vote for the bill to pass.
