MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A whitetail deer culled from a small herd on a Jefferson County hunting preserve has tested positive for chronic wasting disease.
State Veterinarian Robert Ehlenfeldt announced Friday that the 7-year-old buck from the preserve in the town of Farmington tested positive for the fatal brain disease.
The deer, owned by Steve Hookstead of Helenville, had been killed Dec. 1. Only two other deer remain in the preserve, and both have been quarantined to prevent them from being moved from the property without written permission.
The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection said its Animal Health Division will review the animal's history to see if other herds may have been exposed to the disease.
