Sgt. Kirk Straseskie died in Iraq last week as he tried to rescue fellow Marines after their helicopter crashed in a canal.
During Straseskie's funeral at St. Michael's Church in Beaver Dam, the Reverend William Key says giving himself to help others was a way of life for Straseskie.
Key recalled how Straseskie volunteered to help special needs students at Beaver Dam High School and helped out at sports camps.
Rain fell steadily as Straseskie's body arrived at St. Michael's. Six Marines carried the flag-draped coffin into the church, where the American flag was replaced with a pall, a white cloth with a cross on it.
Key's homily was based on a reading from John: “no one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.''
