As holiday decorations go up and the cheer of the season spreads, area firefighters are asking you to stay safe.

The Keep it Green campaign is a visual reminder to be extra cautious when hanging up holiday lights, putting up Christmas trees, and lighting candles.

In Langlade County, 11 different fire departments are aiming to keep their wreaths green, and fires at bay.

"When there's a structure fire and anyone's responsible for it, a red bulb goes in the wreath, for everybody's wreath," said Chief Jon Petroskey of the Antigo Fire Department.

He says the public should be extra careful when lighting candles, being mindful to blow them out before leaving. He also expresses the possible danger of extension cords. He says it's important not to overload them.

Petroskey says last year there were five red bulbs, and nine the year before.

The lone white bulb represents all those who died on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The campaign began Nov. 25th and will continue through Jan. 5th, with the lights shining the entire time.
