Drivers in the area are getting their first chances to experience driving through the snow this season, and unfortunately a few of them ended up in the ditch over the weekend.
"There was quite a bit Sunday, and there's been a little bit (Wednesday) morning with the snow we had on the ground," says Andy Olson, owner of Andy's Towing
And while that means good business for Olson, it's not as beneficial for drivers across the area.
But police officials say the first couple of snowfalls of the season unfortunately bring with them more accidents than normal.
Lieutenant Dennis Saager of the Wausau Police Department says, "Over the course of the spring, summer, and fall, you create certain habits again, and it's just a matter of making your adjustments, slowing down a little bit, and being a little bit more aware."
And while it's important to be aware of the conditions surrounding you, you also need to give yourself a little more time to get where you're going.
"Everybody's driving maybe a little bit too fast, not expecting the roads to be slippery, so they're ending up in the ditch," says Olson.
Saager adds, "In the wintertime, just plan starting your trips a little earlier, 5, 10 minutes, whatever, and don't be in a hurry."
"Most of us are from around here, it's no different than it was last winter, we just gotta remember to be prepared for it," says Olson.
Both men also remind drivers to slow down when you see them helping someone on the road, and give them plenty of room to work.
