MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Up, up and away.
That's the way the projections for the state budget deficit keep going under the impact of national and global recessions.
Governor Jim Doyle said a month ago that the deficit would grow to $3 billion by the end of the two-year budget period that starts next July.
Last week, he raised it to $5 billion. And now he's raised it to $5.4 billion.
The governor says he'll try to save spending for education, but even school aids and the University of Wisconsin System will have to share in the budget-cutting to some extent.
He's calling for drastic cuts in almost every other area of state government spending.
The details will be coming in a couple months when he delivers his budget message to the Legislature.
