STURGEON BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Although it looks pretty on postcards, the rough and rocky terrain along the Lake Michigan shore at the tip of Door County became a big problem for firefighters when a brush fire broke out.
Chief Chris Hecht of the Sister Bay-Liberty Grove Fire Department says getting at the flames and keeping them from spreading to nearby homes took a combined effort of area departments yesterday.
The fire near state Highway 42 between Gills Rock and Northport covered an intermediate bluff that was about 15 feet above the waterline and 30 feet below the level of the homes.
The vegetation that burned included moss and roots between rocks and in crevices. Some trees had to be cut to get at the fire.
It took about five hours to put out the fire.
The cause is under investigation.
