State health officials want smokers to join the Great American Smokeout, and students at UW-Stevens Point are doing just that.

Those who turned in their cigarettes Thursday, vowing to quit smoking cold turkey, walked away with a free turkey sandwich.

And members of the Colleges Against Cancer group handed out quit information and promoted the desire for clean air.

"At our booth we are doing a photo campaign. We did a photo campaign last year. Basically we're getting students, faculty, staff or anyone else who wants to hold a sign saying that they wanna be smoke free," said Katie Leb.

Leb says a DVD with the strong poses will be sent to state legislators in an attempt to make the state smoke-free.

The American Cancer Society says an average of 2,700 Wisconsinites die from lung cancer every year.
