It's a call no parent wants to make, but a Marathon County woman had to dial 9-1-1 when her daughter started choking, and stopped breathing. Alison Struve shares that call, and shows us how the dispatcher's voice helped save the little girl's life.

Eighteen-month-old Haylee is all smiles today, but gave her mom the scare of her life Tuesday.

From the 911 call:

"Dispatch: Marathon County 911.

Vicki: Yes, my daughter is choking on a piece of apple. "

When Vicki Kurth realized Haylee wasn't breathing at lunchtime, she says she tried pounding on her back, but it didn't work.

"So then I called 911 right from the table," she says.

Marathon County dispatcher Jade Marten answered the call.

"Dispatch: Tilt the baby's head so the head is down a little bit, ok?

Use the heel of your hand, your other hand, and try to strike her back about five times. Right between the shoulder blades, ok?

Vicki: Ok.

Dispatch: And did it come out?

Vicki: No.

Dispatch: Ok, try it again."

"I could actually hear Mom, you know, doing the backblows and everything, and she was listening, and she was doing everything I was telling her," Jade says.

"She was very calm on the phone with me," Vicki says. "And she just, step by step, which made me just calm down."

While Gade was giving Vicki step by step instructions from a manual, her co-workers were putting out a second page for help.

"We all work together as a team," Jade says.

Jade stayed on the phone with Vicki while she followed her directions.

"She coughed once, and then she rolled over, and her color came back, and she crawled away and started playing," Vicki says.

And as Haylee grows up, these two mothers say they'll remember the day they worked together to save her life. When the two women met Wednesday, Vicki showed her appreciation by inviting Jade to her upcoming wedding.
