Thousands of people in are coming back home after celebrating the Hmong New Year this weekend. One of the events was held at the Greenheck Field House in Schofield for the Wausau Area New Year Celebration, and many of the children expressed what the new year means to them.
"The Hmong New Year is just a big celebration for the Hmong people around the world. They can just come and enjoy and play ball toss and go shopping at the stores and just enjoy the entertainment," said 15-year old Yer Thor.
The young ladies also explain the importance of dance during this time of year, "When we dance we're representing our culture, so we dress like this or sometimes we just wear money so we just represent our cultures," said Angel Vang, 14-years old.
Although many are little, they explain what this time of year means to them.
"I'm trying really hard to keep it going otherwise the next generation is not going to know what hmong people is all about," says Thor.
The Wausau Area Hmong New Year celebration took place over the past two days, but traditionally the Hmong New Year Celebration is a week long festivity for good health, long lives and good fortune.
