Fewer cigarettes are being sold in Wisconsin, suggesting that smoking may be declining.

An analysis by the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center in Madison finds that cigarette sales dropped three percent last year. Twelve million fewer packs were sold.

Sales also declined one percent in 2000 and eight percent in 1999.

The figures are based on sales data from the state Department of Revenue.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 24 percent of adults in Wisconsin smoke, compared with a national average of 23 percent.
