Boy Suffers Brain Injury in Stabbing at School

The 12-year-old boy was stabbed with a kitchen knife during recess at McNeel Middle School yesterday. Two female sixth-grade classmates are in custody.

Police Captain William Tyler says the kitchen knife remained embedded in the boy's head as he was medflighted to Rockford Memorial Hospital yesterday. He's listed in stable condition today.

Tyler says the boy suffered some bleeding to the brain, but his injuries are not life threatening.

Backpacks and purses were checked today as students arrived for school. Principal Cathy Maxted says random checks are likely to continue.

School district officials said today their main concern now is to make sure students feel safe at school.
