Most graduates get to wear their cap and gown, but the 20 people at the west classroom were recognized in sandals and orange jumpsuits. They are all inmates at the Marathon County Jail.
They have been working with instructors from Northcentral Technical College on getting their GED’s. This is more than just a jail pastime, after release, a high school diploma increases the odds these people will find and job and stay out of jail.
Some of the students said they weren't able to concentrate on school until they ended up in jail. One woman said she was just making the best of a bad time.
And another graduate said he was just glad he would be able to indicate he was a high school graduate on his next job application.
