With the Wisconsin River at flood stage, there is just a slight risk that any homes along the water will be flooded at this time. But, there's a more immediate risk to anyone boating out on the river with the very high currents we're seeing.
That's why those who monitor the river are warning you to stay off until the levels drop back down. Last year, at least one boater drowned in similar conditions.
"I'd certainly be real careful near dams because they all have the flood gates open now and that can create some pretty high currents", says Sam Morgan of the Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company. His company oversees 21 dams along the Wisconsin River.
Morgan says with the ground saturated now, if we got another three-inch rainfall, there could be more risk of homes flooding along the river. Fortunately, the area is supposed to stay dry for at least the next 24 hours, allowing the water to recede below flood stage.
