Peace Rally Needs Permit

Updated: Mon 10:03 AM, Jun 24, 2002

The Rainbow Family of Living Light has held a peace rally in a national forest annually since 1972. This year's rally is in the Ottawa National Forest near Watersmeet, MI.

More than 10,000 people are expected for the weeklong rally starting the first week of July. But the Forest Service fears the impact a group that large will have on the land, and they have sent in the National Incident Management Team.

The Team works with large groups on safety and environmental issues, like choosing an appropriate site for the rally. But this year's site was only announced a week ago, and the Forest Service doesn't like the chosen site.

The 500 people who have already shown up don't plan on moving, and they say they don't need a permit, either.

The permit requires groups larger than 75 people apply for the free permit, but Rainbows say they shouldn't have to ask for permission to do something that is a given right.

There are still two weeks until everyone shows up, and the Forest Service says they would like the group to move to another site.
