They may be more interested in SpongeBob and Hannah Montana today, but in twenty years our children will be the leaders of our communities.
And fourth and fifth graders from across Wausau are more prepared for their future after Wednesday's Elementary Leadership Conference.
Robin Kordus, a Gifted and Talented Teacher for the Wausau School District says, "We give them an opportunity to learn more about their own leadership styles, and how they are seen as leaders back in their school buildings, out in the community, different places like that."
And as the fourth and fifth graders continue to grow, that's exactly where they'll need them.
Luckily, the four-day Elementary Leadership Conference is helping kids develop and cultivate those skills.
The kids spent the day learning about past and present leaders, discovering what makes a great leader, and doing activities to improve their own leadership and teamwork, because they're aware the world will need them someday.
Helena Reising, a 5th grader at the conference says, "Our country couldn't run without leaders, nothing can, if we had no leaders, nothing would happen fluently."
4th grader Sawyer Schlindwein adds, "I like to help people, and I think if I'm a leader, I'll make the world a better place."
And with the help of this Leadership Conference, many of the kids in in attendance are hoping to become the leaders of tomorrow.
The conference isn't over for the kids either; on the 21st they'll be meeting with community leaders throughout Wausau, to see real leaders in action.
