After nearly three decades, a local martial arts instructor is still kicking. Students of Master Robert Likes got to watch their instructor graduate Saturday. That's when Likes earned his eighth degree black belt.
Most martial artists don't have to physically test past the third degree of black belt, because they have already attained master-level status. Likes says he believes in challenging himself, however.
"I've always tried to live in the same way," Likes said. "Just keep persevering."
His dedication and humility is something his students say they also learn from.
"He just always proves that there's always a next level," 15-year-old Cody Hornik, a student of Likes said. "There's always something more you can become."
More than 100 people watched as Master Likes performed to earn his eighth degree black belt. Fifty students participated in the exhibition to help him display his skills.
