DARE Program Terminated

Budget constraints are forcing the Marathon County Sheriff's Department to terminate its Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.

Sheriff Randy Hoenisch says he hates to see the anti-drug program for fifth graders go, but there's an increase in demand for security at the courthouse, and no money in the budget for more staff.

"I found it necessary to move some positions and reallocate those resources," Hoenisch said. "The only area we can afford, if we can afford it at all was from the DARE and neighborhood watch positions."

The sheriff says he would gladly restore the program if there was some way to come up with the $100,000 needed to fund it.
