MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The financially strapped Dane County Humane Society has opened its doors to four-legged victims of Hurricane Ike.

Despite being about $300,000 in the red the last two years, the shelter agreed to help out a Houston-area shelter hit by Hurricane Ike. The shelter was inundated with pets hurricane victims could no longer care for.

Six puppies and 13 dogs made a 25-hour trip from Texas to Wisconsin in a horse trailer.

Humane Society spokeswoman Gayle Viney says it's been a tough year for the Dane County shelter with Iowa floods, horse neglect cases and now 19 dogs from Texas.

The animals are getting vaccinated and spayed or neutered and should be available for adoption starting next week.
