State Patrol Facing Cuts

The state patrol will not be holding a recruiting class this year, for what troopers say is the first time in many years.

"With the governor's budget, we're looking at 54 possible cuts," said Captain Jeffrey Frenette, commanding officer of the state patrol's District 4, "sworn and unsworn cuts, so where they come from we don't know at this point."

The idea is not to lay off any sworn officers, but to eliminate positions through normal attrition. About 90 troopers are part of District Four, which covers 18 counties in Northeastern Wisconsin.
