The Stevens Point Area Public School District has plans to lay off 41 teachers and librarians.
The district is sending preliminary layoff notices to the employees because of a three and a-half million dollar budget cut.
District spokesman David Anderson says retirements and resignations could cut the number of layoffs.
Teachers union president Glen Reindl told the school board that the budget cuts directly affect students.
The district has about 7,600 students and 1,000 employees.
