The Vilas County Sheriff's Office warns residents in the area of an IRS telephone scam.
Residents have reported getting telephone calls from people who identify themselves as an officer working with the IRS or as a special agent with the IRS, according to the press release.
The scammer tells the potential victim they owe money to the IRS, and they must make arrangements to pay immediately.
The scammer may threaten to arrest the victim or file for prosecutions, request person information or make a number of calls to the same residence.
If you get a call like this, the sheriff's office said to not give any personal information out, hang up immediately, write down the number and call police.
