Glen Steger's wife and her daughter say they hope they can finally stop hiding.
Steger's the man who was arrested in June, when he was found to have a cache of weapons, armor, and explosives in a Plover home.
A $5000 cash bond was set Monday in Green Lake County on a charge of repeated sexual assault of a child.
NewsChannel 7 spoke with the mother of that child, Glen Steger's wife, who says the past several years of their life have been spent in hiding from Steger. She’s asked us not to reveal her name or location.
She says Glen always had a fascination with survivalism. “He had all his camping gear and said, “if anything happens we can always live in the woods”,” she said. “And he did have books on survivalists, survival camping."
But she says things quickly took a turn for the worse. She says he began to beat her, and sexually assault her daughter. In 2002, when she confronted him to tell him they were going to the police about the sexual assaults, she says he threatened them.
"He threatened us”, she said. “He said he had the power to take our lives, and that he'd make me watch my kids die in front of me, and said 'they'll never take me alive'. And that was the last thing he ever said to me."
At that point, Steger’s wife says she began going through items he had in his locked, private room in the basement of her home, and what she found was shocking. "The power he had in his hands, locked in my house was scary”, she said. “There was sawed off shotguns and sniper rifles and handguns, and I gave up counting at 4 thousand rounds of ammunition and I know there was more than that."
She says she called the police about what she found in her home, but before they could come to investigate, she says Glen returned home and took his cache of weapons.
That was in 2002. Since that time, she says Glen’s been moving from place to place, hiding from authorities. And she and her daughter have been hiding from Glen, afraid of what he may do. "I haven't had a phone in my name, rented a home in my name, bought a car”, she said. “I haven't filed a divorce because he'd have to be notified so he'd know what County I lived in."
Then in June of this year, she heard he had been located in Plover, and arrested for the sexual assaults. When authorities arrested him, they say he was wearing a gun belt with a loaded weapon. They then found his cache, with 11 guns, grenades, homemade bombs, armor, silencers, and lots of ammunition.
Glen Steger’s now facing 8 felonies for the weapons charges, and he’s been indicted in Federal Court for a charge of Unlawful Transport of Firearms. He's also charged with repeated sexual assault of a child in Green Lake county, for the alleged assaults on his wife's daughter.
His wife says she's still uneasy, and probably will be for some time. But she's relieved he's in prison, and slowly, she and her daughter will go on with their lives. "It's a little weird to take a breath and say, what do you want to do?”, she said. “Should we actually go somewhere? Can I actually file a divorce now?"
Court records show Steger was convicted of an armed robbery in Milwaukee in 1984. He currently has cash bonds in both Green Lake and Portage Counties.
